May be a dumb question but being poly are you typically sexually involved with both parties of a couple or can it be with one of them?
It depends on the couple, but it can be either or

Some people are not sexually active for various reasons, but still have romantic relationships. Including poly ones ^_^

Polyamory is just a relationship style that supports the idea that you can love and be romantically involved with more than one person. Whether you choose to be sexually involved with partners is a different preference.
I typically do not date couples, only individuals. If that helps answer your question on relationship dynamics

What got everyone into exploring poly?
My friend is poly and she told me about it and it got me interested in it
I always just had a really hard time with monogamous culture. I also grew up going to an Amish school that was a very communal setting, and I wanted to get back to a sense of unity...without all the religion. Plus it allowed me to maintain my independence, which I felt was important to me as a woman. Most importantly, I really love my partners. Each of them genuinely. The people were always more important than the structure or headcount etc.

Happenstance for me. My partner was our walking with a friend one day and her friend said “wouldn’t it be cool if we were sister wives” partner told me about it and it spawned years of conversations around what that could and our relationship etc

Poly was what you gravitated toward as opposed to swinging?
I have always believed that you can love more than one person. The idea of swinging doesn’t interest me because I want to be able to build that relationship and not just take it as having fun with multiple partners. (Not sure if that makes sense 😂)
The key part about poly is that you also have to want your partners to have multiple loving and fulfilling relationships as well.
