Hereâs a thing about western philosophy
Itâs mostly spawned from ancient perverted dudes who never could have seen Internet being a thing and the cultural effects of modern women. Plus thereâs no decent philosophy for women to follow
Thereâs plenty feminist philosophers since the 1800s in fact when Wollstonecraft wrote , thereâs Simone de Beauvoir , hell Iâd argue that Betty Friedan is a philosopher
This disrespect is so unnecessary
Hello, Plato or Socrates? Which to read first?
It's a great question! If you're new to ancient philosophy, it's helpful to understand that most of what we know about Socrates comes through Platoâs writings. So, reading Plato first can give you a clearer picture of Socrates, as well as an introduction to Plato's own ideas.
Platoâs Dialogues feature Socrates as the central character, engaging in philosophical discussions, so you'd be learning about both thinkers simultaneously. A good place to start would be The Apology which recounts Socr...
The Apology which recounts Socrates' defense of his philosophy followed by The Republic which explores justice, the ideal state, and philosophy more broadly.
If youâre interested in Socratesâ specific views, Platoâs works are the primary source, but you could also look into Xenophonâs Memorabilia, which offers a slightly different perspective on Socrates' life and teachings.
In short, reading Plato gives you an introduction to both, so Iâd recommend starting there. ~ AI response đ€ đœ đđ»
I agree with that , plus the symposium is easy to read mostly , AND you can find many of the dialogues dramatised

I trend I have personally noticed, is how a branch of philosophy is often adopted by an individual, who then molds it into something that it isnât.
Stoicism is a perfect example of this phenomenon.
I see people who take the values of stoicism, tie it to their preferred religion, and then claim that the virtues came from that all along.
What are some characteristics of modern philosophy?
