Ephesians 2:9 says specifically it's not of works. It's of faith alone. James 2 Echoes 1 Corinthians 13, that works without faith amount to nothing, that faith causes good works. James 2:27 isn't saying works cause faith; on the contrary, that works is a test of faith.
