I don’t know if we can know that though. People tend to idealize and romanticize the past, but when you read firsthand accounts from previous generations they had their fair share of issues. I think life and society are different, but I’d argue strongly that it’s no worse.
For example, we feel anxiety now from social media whereas my grandparents worried about a bad year of crops meant losing everything they worked their whole lives for. I complain about the cost of eggs, but I’ve never missed meals because of nationwide scarcity. I don’t fear for my life every time I have a fever.
