Through abiogenesis, where simple organic molecules formed, assembled into polymers, got enclosed in membranes (protocells), and developed self-replication and metabolism.
It's thought that the conditions on earth (that was very different from now) was just right for this to happen. Lightning, volcanic activity, UV radiation and materials would have given enough energy for this to happen.
But it's not well understood. Science is getting more and more precise. So we will find out more.
