It serves some functionality. It’s the currency you can buy avatar customization with. There’s some groups that you can’t chat in without a certain level of karma. And also you can use it to block others from messaging you via a wall. You can set your wall as high as your karma is and anyone with less karma than your wall cannot message you. Very useful for keeping creeps out.

And you lose it if you don’t obey the app’s rules

So it’s also a very loose gauge of whether that person is someone you’d want to talk to or not
